These last few months have required a bit of meditation from me. As the days grow shorter I realize that I need to work longer on the things that matter most to me. Contrary to the posts per month figure this blog is important to me, but I need to come to a new understanding of what I’m doing with it. To this point I have used this blog as a repository for my thoughts on not just gaming but relevant and important real world events.
When I first started writing on this platform I was completely inexperienced in the realm of writing in a public space. What I wrote looked like it was written by a high school freshmen, but it was fueled by the desire to get my ideas out there. As I’ve gotten more practice in and begin larger projects I’ve found the amount of posts I can get out to be less and less, and when I do post something it feels like their always of a value lower than I would prefer.
Instead of telling myself that I’m going to do better in the future, or think of interesting ideas for things to do, I’ve started to take action. You haven’t seen much of anything I’ve written in months because I’ve been working on a project that I wasn’t able to put out yet. It started as a short story I decided to write out of a moment of questionable insight and has ended up being a significant task. When my composition theory class assigned a personal writing project I thought it best to use what I was working on to begin with. What started as a ten page incredibly rough draft, through four or five drafts, has turned into something that’s daunting me.
I don’t know if I’ve talked about it much recently but I have developed a world to set stories in over these lat few years. Combining influences from games, movies, books, and daydreams from when I was a kid, this world means a lot to me. There’s a particular story that I want to tell in a novel form but the size of scale that presents has been a brick wall to someone like me who’s experienced with that. This short story I’ve been working on is intended to introduce an important character and the world itself, and hopefully end up as a quality stand alone story itself.
What started as ten pages eventually became sixteen, yet the story just didn’t feel complete. Everyone I showed it to thought that it didn’t have a satisfying ending; that there was more to the story to tell. After a few weeks of thinking and planning I decided to turn the short story into the first two parts of a serial.
Starting in January I will be posting this serial here on this blog and it will hopefully last through twelve monthly parts to the end of the year. Not only will this, in theory, garner interest in the world I’m building but it will give me confidence in my own long-form prose skills. In the end it will probably be novella length, if not more. If I can just get something of a similar scale done I feel like I will have a better shot at finished the larger project.
This isn’t the only change coming. I plan on doing some changes to the appearance of this blog. I spent an entire day setting up how this page looks back in July of 2013 and it hasn’t changed since. It feels like it’s time for a breath of fresh air that better reflects who I am and what I want this tiny island in the sea of internet to be. Overall appearance and non-blog post content will be looked at.
Basically, you now know what’s going on if you’re ever on here and see some funky stuff. Anyways, I hope that all of these changes, along with a few more that I’m still in the planning phase for, will work out. I want to do more on this blog than sloppily written reviews of games. I still want to do those, but not as the main content that I post every other month. I want this place to feel more personal.
Thanks for reading, wish me luck.
